This week’s Devotional Topic
MEMORIAL DAY (Memories and Patriotism)
Memorial Day brings many things to our minds each year. Of course it is a time of memorial, memories of those who have gone before and especially those who have given their last full measure of devotion to our country. And we think of this country, Patriotism.
Memories are sometimes uncomfortable and downright painful. They can also bring up joyful moments, events that bring a smile to our faces. Many of you remember when you would get out the Photo Albums and look through picture after picture. Many of them black and white or polaroid snapshots. The newer ones would be in color, sometimes glossy and with finger prints on them. Then as times have changed over the years we can see pictures stored in our computers or cell phones. We might have some old Super 8 films on reels with videos. Today we can pull up full color videos everywhere from Facebook, to YouTube to any computer, laptop, PC, Pad or Cell Phone. And even without all those things, God has blessed us with a brain that can bring up sights, sounds and even fragrances of events from the past. These may be easier for some of us to bring these to remembrance than others who may be able to remember way back when they were children. But on the other hand, might not be able to remember what they had for breakfast.
God makes it very clear that Memories are important. Here are just two examples:
The eucharist, Lord’s Supper, communion…
Found in Luke 22 and also I Corinthians 11:24,25 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
And there are many other things that God wants us to remember…
John 14:25,26 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
We should remember to pray for the leaders in our country, whether they are on the local school board, mayors, governors, police officers, judges, members of Congress, our President.
I Timothy 2:1,2 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.
We may enjoy and appreciate being part of this great land however, this world is NOT our home…
Philippians 3:20,21 “…we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like His own, using the same power with which He will bring everything under His control. AMEN
