This week’s Devotional Topic
THANKSGIVING IS…
As we continue in our daily routine, we are encouraged by God’s word, our instructions for life, to give thanks in everything. And as we all know, it is one thing to hear and another to “obey”. As the Thanksgiving holiday rapidly approaches, let us all consider what that means. What part should Thanksgiving play in our lives. Is it just an annual “Holiday” or much more? Is it an “Attitude of Heart”? Is it a “Vital part of Worship”?
As we think on these things, let’s start by looking at our prayer lives. When you pray and give thanks to the LORD…..do the words “thank you” really say all that our hearts feel toward Him? Some of us remember a song we learned in Sunday School that went…”Count your many blessings, name them one by one…” Take time to make that list….the things that we should give Him thanks for. There is so much that He has done for us, in us and through us. Thank God for the relationship that we have with Him, that He made possible through His son – Jesus. Thank Him for the peace we enjoy knowing that all our sins, past, present and future are all covered by the blood…that He sees us in the righteousness of His Son. Thank Him for making all things new in your life, for the gift of His Spirit that guides us into all truth, helps us to understand His word and gives us strength to do what we know is right. And thank God that He is powerful enough to use us in ministry to others. In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Ephesians 5:18b – 20 “…be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;..”
We are told to give thanks to God in everything. How can we do that? That becomes easier the closer we get to Him. The more we learn about God, the easier it is to have faith in Him, to trust Him and as we grow in grace and the knowledge of Him, thanksgiving is the natural result….in ALL things.
