This week’s Devotional Topic
Faith
Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Faith Chapter” in the bible. In the first few verses we find a definition of our faith: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. These words are followed by a long list of people who lived by faith.
That list, a “Hall of Faith” is followed in Chapter 12 with this call to action: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility He endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up. Dear God, strengthen our faith as we keep our eyes on your son.
