This week’s Devotional Topic
Spiritual Goals
As we stand at the precipice of a new year, it is very normal, important and even vital that we think about goals… not just any goals, but God’s goals for us… A Spiritual “to-do list”… Heavenly New Year’s Resolutions”. Even if we knew what the year ahead would bring our way, it would be nearly impossible for our feeble minds to set reasonable goals. God alone knows what the future will bring and we can leave it in His hands.
Because He knows the future, He is the best source for our goals! The place to start looking for directions is in His word, the book of instructions for this life. His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. And when we lack wisdom, we are told to ask Him and He will give it to us. When you read through the pages of scripture, God’s will is on every page. His goals are pretty clear. All are important and some are more outstanding than others.
For example: if you were to try and put some ahead of others, then to “believe” would be near the top. We should have “faith”. Praise and worship Him is clearly a spiritual goal. Loving God and loving others is in there too. It’s almost impossible to get our heads around the “list”. God knew it would be that way. I think that is why He helped to sum it up when His son Jesus said, in Mark 12, “The most important commandment is this:” “….you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
This week’s Scripture: Acts 16:31; Romans 12:1,2; I Thessalonians 4:1-3; I Thessalonians 5; Psalm 46:10; Hebrews 10:24,25; Hebrews 11:6
