This Week’s Devotional Topic

LARGE AND IN CHARGE

As our country and most of the world has dealt with the Virus and continues to reel from it’s affects, we are reminded of how frail we are. And in the midst of all of the uncertainty in this world and its systems hopefully, we realize how great our God is. Indeed, He is ‘large and in charge’. And we can have confidence in Him as God of all creation, and loving us so much that He has provided for our salvation.

The Psalmist David had  a pretty good understanding of how awesome God is and expressed it very well in song.

Psalms 90:1,2   A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Psalm 65:5-10   By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas; the one who by his strength established the mountains, being girded with might; who stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples, so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy. You visit the earth and water it; you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide their grain, for so you have prepared it. You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth.

The Apostle Paul understood our frailty. He knew that God’s strength is made perfect in our weaknesses. He was dealing with the reality and discomfort of a thorn in his flesh when he wrote to the church at Corinth.

II Corinthians 12:8-10   For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

The Lord will show His strength for the benefit of His own.

II Chronicles 16:9a   For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.

Our hope is not in this world or anything it has to offer.

Although the government has things to offer and some benefits, our trust is in the Lord and in the power of His might. He promised to provide ALL our needs and He is faithful. Our hope should be put in the kingdom that is eternal. All the other kingdoms of the world will ultimately crumble.

Before events and circumstances of our recent past, we believed that our institutions would not fail us, our economy would hold fast, our health will continue. The Bible says that we our fragile and stability around us is not a constant.

I Peter 1:3-7   Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Psalm 103:13-19   The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone—as though we had never been here. But the love of the LORD remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children’s children of those who are faithful to his covenant, of those who obey his commandments! The LORD has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything.

We should walk humbly before our God as we are weak and unstable. We can trust in His unfailing love. And we should rest in Him and the power of His might. He will direct our steps and meet all our needs. Indeed, He is “large and in charge”.
