This week’s Devotional Topic
FREEDOM & LIBERTY
Did you know that there is a difference between the concept of Freedom and what Liberty is?
According to the dictionary, Freedom is the quality or state of being free: such as liberation from slavery, independence. Unrestricted use a political right. As Christians we have freedom from the penalty and burden of Sin.
John 8:31-36  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
AND Liberty is Freedom with restrictions. Liberty includes certain political, or economic rights and privileges, permission to go freely within specified limits. Christians have liberties to enjoy what God has blessed us with.
Jesus Christ Himself read from the Prophet Isaiah about the fact that He fulfilled the prophecy, to set at LIBERTY those who are oppressed…
Luke 4:16-21  And he (Jesus) came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
We are FREE to enjoy LIBERTIES within God’s instruction manual, the Bible following the direction of His Holy Spirit. As Jesus proclaimed in John 10:10 I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Real life and true Joy – the rewards of freedom in Christ.
